Happy Start of Summer!
I’m helping my daughter move into her first New York apartment. She is sharing it with two classmates. The market is brutal, and our goal was to find a monthly payment that was less than our mortgage. This New Yorker cover about sums it up……
This summer, I’m working on an essay about the legitimacy of work, and it’s a real bear. It’s a tough exercise in what to omit because there is sooooo much history and research, and I have so much to say.
In the meantime, I’ll share what I’m reading, listening to, and watching to buy myself more time. Consider these like a Summer Reading List - easily digestible pleasures.
Enjoy
Reading
No Filter: The Good, The Bad, & The Beautiful by Paulina Porizkova. I hesitated to include this because, well, Paulina is best known as a supermodel who was married to Rik Ocasek of The Cars. She experienced multiple traumas, starting with her parent’s exile when she was just three years old, and is layers deeper than most give her credit for. This is not 'woe is me-ism’ or trauma porn. Rather, it is a raw, insightful, and witty look into an unexpectedly extraordinary life.
Asking employees to be in the office full-time (or even part-time) is a non-starter for knowledge workers who face monthly childcare, transportation, and other expenses of $800 - $2,200. Loved this article from the WSJ because it reminded me of how much money and time I spent trying to find childcare and commuting when I worked in an office setting!
Watching
The Diplomat. Because anyone who majored in International Relations thought going into the Foreign Service would be this exciting or glamorous. Cliffhangers galore!
Alas, all great things must come to an end. I haven’t been this bummed about a series ending since the original Sex and the City. I’ve enjoyed the humor and humility of Ted Lasso and rewatch each episode to get all of the zingers and references (also to understand the various accents.) I’m also a new fan of Brett Goldstein, who really is here, there, and f-in everywhere now, and Hannah Waddingham (here she is, unrecognizable as the Nun in GOT). Goodnight, sweet Ted.
Excited for Ted Lasso alum Toheeb Jimoh’s West End run in Romeo and Juliet - it looks so exciting and fresh! If any of you are in London this summer, check it out!
Listening
I’ve been a huge Pomplamousse fan since they debuted creative DIY videos on YouTube. Although known for their inventive covers and mash-ups, they also do original work. Lead singer Nataly Dawn has done a variety of solo activities. Now her partner (in Pomplamousse and in life) Jack Conte and other musicians and vocalists from PMP have released their own songs under the moniker Magaziine. Random fact: Jack also started Patreon. Of course, he did.

Until next time,
